Seeing the Future 5 Years Ago

As we move into 2012, it's interesting to look back in history at an event that was astonishing at the time and clearly prophetic.

The controversial event occurred on December 13, 2006 when Time magazine announced their annual choice for "Person of the Year."  Can you recall who it was? Most of you will not.

"You" were chosen in 2006, as Time magazine's Person of the Year. Time recognized the millions of people who contribute user-generated social media content to Wikipedia, YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, and the multitudes of other websites featuring user contribution. If "You" were chosen today we would have to consider the contributions to countless new social network sites including such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+.

Content Is The Key To Effective Blogs

Content Is The Key To Effective Blogs
If you are contemplating writing a blog for your business there is one factor that is paramount above all others. The content of your blog will determine how effective it is, ultimately, for your company. The blog you write about your company is going to become, at least to some extent, the company's face to your blog's audience. You need to grab the attention of readers and hold on to it. Relevant, compelling content, that is useful to the readers of the blog, will keep them coming back for more.
Your blog must be search engine friendly as well. The use of keywords is very important. If you present information that is relevant to your company's industry the keywords will be there. To make sure check https://adwords.google.com

First and most important, there's no cost and very little time is required to get it up and running. Social media is a cost-effective business strategy that quickly outperforms any of the traditional forms of display advertising. The effort is well worth the results if you take the initiative.

Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are the social media sites with the most traffic. To get the best results for your time, concentrate on these sites first. Your business will enjoy valuable exposure without overwhelming you. Implement all three at once or one at a time and monitor the results.

Facebook Profiles are meant for individuals, while Facebook Pages are designed for organizations, businesses, brands, and public figures. Pages offer robust features for businesses such as the ability to add additional applications to help communicate and engage with their audiences. Since Facebook Pages are public, anyone can find and 'like' your page, providing an easy way for potential customers to find you online.

Understanding Twitter Hashtags

When using Twitter, you've probably already seen a tweet or two containing a word with the symbol ("#") attached to it. Twitter calls this a "hashtag." At least one of them can usually be found among the trending topics on Twitter.

Hashtags are a simple way to identify and connect tweets about a specific topic. They make it easier for users to find additional relevant tweets on a particular subject.

You can create a hashtag simply by appending the hash symbol to a word, like this: #pizza.
Twitter users often search hashtags for content from people they aren't following. Using hashtags can be a great way to extend your reach on Twitter and connect with other users with the same interests.  See the hashtag search results example below for #pizza.

A Mini Guide to the Art of Business Tweeting

Combining a call to action with timely, relevant, and useful information all inside 140 characters requires a skill that must be mastered for a business tweet to be effective.  Just because the information passes quickly with fewer characters doesn't mean it's less important or should be taken lightly. In fact, incorrectly tweeting can be a recipe for disaster and alienate potential customers.

Think before you tweet:
Before you publish a comment or offer information ask yourself if what you're about to post is meaningful. Does your post add value to your social network community and reflect favorably on your business? Save your tweets for when you have something worthwhile sharing. Your audience will come to appreciate your professional demeanor and will be more willing to follow you.

Benefits of Facebook Fans

With Facebook Fan Pages being around for several months now, the concepts of "fans" and "likes" are well understood by many companies and celebrities. There are hundreds of Pages with well over one million fans on Facebook

For those uninitiated, getting Facebook "fans" and "Likes" provides at least two advantages:
Increased Exposure
For small businesses, a company Facebook Page offers incredible value in that it will bring in new customers with zero cost. As you get your current customers to "Like" your Facebook Page, their Facebook friends will see this activity and also "Like" your Page, especially if they trust their friend's choices in who they do business with. This adds a viral component because as more people become fans of your business on Facebook, even more people will become exposed to it.

Providing Exceptional Customer Service

 Providing Exceptional Customer Service
_________________________________________________________________________

Providing "good" customer service is not enough these days. You must provide EXCEPTIONAL customer service and go above and beyond what the customers expect.  With that in mind, here are some tips for providing exceptional customer service.

1. LIsten to any of your customer's ideas, needs or concerns that they might have. By doing this you are getting an outsiders point of view about your service or product and letting them know that you care about what they think.

2.  Let your customers know that you appreciate their business. Thank them any chance that you can. Send them a Thank You note, a small gift of some kind, a card at the holidays, or give them a simple phone call.  Anything that you can do to let them know that you appreciate them and their loyalty.

3.  Know what your customers want and anticipate their needs. This will keep you one step ahead of them and always provide them with a service or product that they will want.

3 Simple rules to follow when choosing a blog name

1) It must describe your blog: it is probable that lots of people will see a link to your blog before having the chance to actually read it. If just by looking at the name they can figure what the blog is about they will be more likely to visit it.

2) It must be easy to remember: suppose your blog talks about exercise, fitness and health food advice in general. Naming it "The Every Day Guide to Exercise, Fitness and General Health Advice" would be an accurate and definitive description of the blog, but would it be easy to remember? Stick with simple names. " A Guide to Fitness and Health"

3) It must be equal to the domain name: this rule is often ignored, probably because finding a descriptive domain name that has not been registered yet is a difficult task. If your domain name does not match your blog name you will probably lose some readers. When people visit your blog through a link they will just read the name of the blog. Should they decide to revisit the site a couple of days later they will just type that name followed by a dot com. If they do not find your blog once they hit enter they will just go somewhere else.

SEO and How it Effects Blog Postings.

SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization. SEO is the process of increasing the number of visitors to a Website or Blog by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the Search Engine Results Page (SERP). When a user does a search using an Internet browser such as Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari the results displayed back is the SERP.

The higher a Blog post ranks in the sequenced results of a search, the greater the chance the site will be chosen by the user. Most often, users do not click through pages and pages of search results.

Typically, users select search results at the top of the first page.  Keywords and phrases embedded within a blog post are used by the SEO to determine rankings. It’s absolutely mandatory for businesses to use strategic SEO keywords in their blogs that will influence the SEO placement of their posts.

A Tool to Help Business Owners Struggling With Social Media

As running a business becomes more challenging in a down economy, going beyond simply selling products and services has become more important than ever. Today, business owners are turning to social networks with their far-reaching influence as an innovative way to find new customers.

Turning customers into fiercely loyal fans and advocates that will speak favorably of their experiences in ever-growing referral networks is the strategic end game.  Sadly, some well-intended businesses may be dropping the ball with their social networks. To really take advantage of a medium like Facebook you have to engage people on a daily basis. Too often we hear, “I just don’t have the time.” Most would agree that finding time to post on a consistent daily basis is a legitimate concern.

Are Social-networking Buttons on Laptop keyboards Necessary?

Acer recently announced Gateway laptops with keys that give one-touch access to social networking sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

Pressing the social-networking hot key on the new Gateway laptops activates an integrated widget through which customers can update their status, post messages or upload multimedia, or see updates from the feeds of friends.

However, Laptop makers such as Hewlett-Packard and Dell say such buttons are an unnecessary addition when software could do the job.

OnFast.com, a social media marketing and coupon service recently announced a “Feeds” option to their software product. The “Feeds” option allows the user to view and update all their social media channels from one screen. “Feeds” eliminates the need for hardware social media buttons on keyboards.

Why Blog?

The word “blog” is one of the most popular words on the Internet today. This buzz- word is one of the most popularly searched terms on the net. A blog is an acronym for “web log” which is an online topical journal that is written for others to read. You can create blogs for personal reasons, educational and informational reasons, and most importantly for your business. Blogging is an excellent compliment to all of your other on-line social media marketing strategies.

As a marketing tool, blogs offer enormous potential. When it comes to e-mailed newsletter communications and blogging, the dynamics are completely different. Blog postings are much easier to write and disseminate than traditional newsletters. Once newsletters are e-mailed, they get deleted or buried in an obscure mail folder. There is no confusion about blogging being spam the way e-mails may be perceived. Your blog messages exist inside your blog on the Internet until you decide to remove them.

Nothing facilitates conversation, communication and community the way blogging does. If you have relevant timely information to share, a product to sell, a brand to market or something to say on the Internet then blogging should be your first choice.

Twitter for Businesses

Twitter is a powerful information network.  It is used by millions of people and businesses to quickly share information.

On Twitter, anyone can read, write and share messages of 140 characters or less.  These "tweets" are public and open to anyone who wants to read them.  Users can "follow" your account, which allows them to subscribe to your messages.  Followers view all of your messages in their newsfeed.

Why should businesses use Twitter?

Businesses can use Twitter to quickly share information, build relationships with existing and potential customers, and gather insights and feedback.

Twitter Basics
  • Mention: You can mention another user in your Tweets by preceding it with the @ sign.
  • Retweet: Click the retweet link in order to share a tweet by another user and send it to your followers
  • Message: To privately message another user, prefix your tweet with DM or D, @, and the person's username.  (i.e. DM @onfast)
  • Hashtag: Hashtags (#) are used to express the theme of a tweet and to categorize it (i.e. #vacation).  Users can click on hashtags to view similar tweets.

4 Easy Steps to Start Your Social Media Marketing

First, create a business fan page on Facebook. Your Facebook postings will reach out directly to the kinds of people who are most likely to act on your offerings. Use the page to engage your audience by leveraging your network of friends. Ask friends to “Like” you and help spread the word. Be active on your fan page and let people know what you're all about.

Second, get on Twitter. Start following others who are industry colleagues. Choose to follow the people who you are interested in and re-share (re-tweet) their worthwhile information. On a regular basis, post your own original content to promote your products and services.

Third, start a business blog using Google Blogger. Write about what you do and why. You should be publishing content about your business that is objective, timely, and relevant. Posting often using industry key words helps position you as an expert in your field and gets you noticed. Your objective is to improve your ranking on the Google search engine.

7 Steps To Optimizing Emails For Online Marketing

Here's a few simple things to keep in mind to optimize emails for online marketing.

1- Grab the readers attention in the title and first few words. The reader will make a decision very early on when reading the email whether it is worth their time. Make it worth their time. Use a call to action right in the beginning. Give them a benefit of what you are trying to sell right away. Use words such as Get, Buy, Go, Use etc. Also, make sure you are writing in an active style rather than a passive style.

2 - Make sure you link to your website after a few short lines and then throughout the rest of your email. Chances are they are going to opt out rather quickly even if you did grab and keep their attention. Give them a place to go for more information.

3 - Trim the purpose and benefit of what you are selling into a few features, preferably three. Use bullet points to make them clear and noticeable to the reader. Explain to the reader exactly what is being offered to them.

4 - Include a favorable quote from a satisfied customer who has purchase or used the product or service you are offering. It's always good to give the reader some real world experience to back up what you are trying to sell, but keep it short.

A Better Deal

There is little difference in the much-hyped “Daily Deal” coupon distribution methods. It seems hardly a week goes by without a new provider announcing a “Me Too” service.  Merchants that have used these services are now seeing that good deals for consumers aren’t always good deals for businesses. Recent studies show little more than half of participating businesses made money on the deals. Surprisingly, one-fourth lost money and the rest say they broke even.

After discounting products and services and paying for the daily distribution, few merchants ever establish an on-going relationship with the consumer.  Only half of the retailers surveyed said they’d run a deal again.

OnFast recognized the considerable merchant discontent with the daily e-mail deal and produced an innovative coupon distribution service based on social network relationships.  For a low monthly fee, merchants can use OnFast to author their own deals and distribute branded coupons to their social network sites.

4 Steps To A Search Engine Optimized Press Release

The purpose of writing a press release is to tell the world about something newsworthy and important, such as a new product, service or some other item that your company or your company's client is trying to promote. While working toward this goal, why not help that press release perform double duty for your company? You can ensure that your press release is heavily distributed by ranking high in news search engines.  Accomplishing this takes a little time to make sure the press release is keyword-rich and has links back to your company's site.  All it takes is a few easy steps.

1- When you know what your subject is and who the target audience is, take the time to research what keywords are important and relevant to that subject/audience. Related link at: https://adwords.google.com.  OnFast has both a built-in keyword meter tool and a list of the top 100 keywords for each industry we support, but you can also use the adwords tool as well.

2- I have found that if you write a good, informative press release that has compelling content pertaining to the subject, the keywords will already be there. You may still have to tweak it a little later, but make sure you are using keywords as you write. It is very important that keywords are present in your headings and add them as you are writing in strategic places.  Also have keywords in links back to you or your client's site.

Correctly Formatting A Press Release

I have learned over time as a reader and writer, that all press releases written in the hopes of being noticed and read, follow a pattern. This pattern is the format that all successful press releases conform to.

A press release must start out with all the subjects' contact information in the upper left hand corner. This ensures that if you do get your point across, the audience knows where to go for more info or better yet, where to buy your product or service. Next comes the heading, which is probably the most important part of the whole press release.  The heading is the key to whether your press release gets noticed or falls by the wayside.  It should be as short as possible and compelling to the reader.  It needs to grab their attention and hopefully make them want to read more.

Almost as important as the heading is the subheading.  The subheading can go a long way toward keeping that attention you fought for in the heading.  Expounding on your subject, without giving the whole story away, is the goal here.
